Creative Writing Professor Katherine Damm Published, Awarded in The Iowa Review

Readers of The Iowa Review’s 2022/23 Winter issue may recognize a familiar name among the contributors. Visiting Assistant Professor Katherine Damm had her short story, “The Happiest Day of Your Life,” published. In addition, she has won the magazine’s Tim McGinnis Award.

Every year, The Iowa Review chooses to honor one piece with the Tim McGinnis Award, named for a contributor with a refreshing comedic sensibility who passed away shortly after being published in 1986. Per an editor’s note from 2009, “Holding out for comic sketches, which had been our intent, threatened to make it a very occasional prize as almost all such writing wilts under a second glance.”

Professor Damm’s short story, “The Happiest Day of Your Life,” which follows a man attending the wedding of his girlfriend’s ex-boyfriend, was a great fit for the award. She has taught Creative Writing at MMC since 2022.

Congratulations, Professor Damm!
