Land Acknowledgement
We want to acknowledge the land that our institution is on - to recognize the violent history and legacy of the area currently known through colonial knowledge as the United States and known through Indigenous knowledge asTurtle Island. Marymount Manhattan College is situated on the Lenape island of Mannahatta in Lenapehoking, the Lenape homeland.
We pay respect to Lenape peoples, past, present, and future, and for their continued presence in the homeland and throughout the Lenape diaspora. We offer our care and gratitude to the land, water, and air of Lenapehoking and are committed to resisting colonialism and imbalance with Mother Earth. In particular, through this land acknowledgment, and as a dance department, we reaffirm our commitment to working against colonialism.
We would also like to take this opportunity to pay homage to our ancestors, no matter what culture you are from, for it is through them that we are here, living, moving, and breathing to do our creative-pedagogical-scholarly work, i.e., shaping dance for the twenty-first century and hopefully showing how bodies in movement might bring about a future where we can see just and equitable treatment of everyone.
