    Why Study Sociology?

    Does inequality bother you? Do you wonder how vulnerable communities can empower themselves and seek justice? When you study sociology you will understand how systems and experiences of oppression and exclusion as well as privilege and solidarity are created. Armed with this knowledge, you can become an effective agent of social change.

    Why Study Sociology at MMC?

    In New York City, the global is local. You’ll engage all aspects of society through deep exploration of the city’s diverse neighborhoods, cultural institutions, political networks, and public policy debates. You’ll observe power structures, norms, and hierarchies up close and start to question them using the sociologist’s toolkit: data visualization, oral history, statistics, photography, and other methods. Best of all, you’ll be knee deep in an urban ecosystem that embraces action and social change leading to greater transparency and equity.

    What You Will Learn

    Studying people and culture can be a critical complement to almost all areas of study. With a minor in Sociology, our students learn how inequality and discrimination block the road to justice. This knowledge is the substance of a sociology committed to harmony across challenging social differences such as sexuality, race, or, religion. Sociology minors will learn;

    • How to identify social phenomena and their causes
    • How to explain and articulate social change
    • Effective methods to evaluate social welfare

    • The Sociology program helped me understand that social issues are socially experienced and socially produced even though as a society we tend to blame individuals.

      Jennifer Fecu ’21

      Class of 2021, Sociology minor

    • Sociology opened my eyes to understanding issues of oppression as systemic and institutional rather than individual. Sociology as a framework can be applied to deeply understand and contextualize all facets of life. Sociology pushes you to ask why and search for the truth behind social phenomena.
