“The relationships I formed through MMC have been long lasting, whether it be friends, professors, or coworkers. I’ll be forever grateful to MMC for surrounding me in such a positive, supportive group.”

About

Robin Hodgson ’18 had always wanted to live in New York City but knew that he wouldn’t succeed at a larger university like NYU. His high school English teacher introduced him to Marymount Manhattan and after his first tour of campus, Hodgson knew MMC was the place for him. He quickly acclimated to his new surroundings, in part by beginning a work study position in the Office of Admission his first year.  This role lasted his entire four years on campus. “It gave me the most amazing work experience that would launch me into the ‘real world’,” he says.

As a student in the Communication and Media Arts program, Hodgson explains there were two aspects of the department that helped prepare him for his current work. “The first is the technical courses where I was taught the Adobe Creative Suite (in my opinion a must for every job seeker in todays market),” he says. “Second, so many classes revolved around non-traditional ways to craft a story. This was extremely useful for me, especially when documenting highly technical work.”

A resident of Astoria, Queens, Hodgson currently works as a marketing associate for the global digital agency Valtech, managing case studies and events for North America. In November 2019, he finished running two campaigns (one in Europe) of which he is deeply proud.

“When I started my first job out of school, I kind of assumed that everyone at the company was smarter than me and had it all figured out,” Hodgson explains. “Luckily, I’ve come to learn that’s not the case. Everyone is just trying their best. Continue to produce good work, be good to people, and you’ll be able to grow your career out of an entry level role.”

For the current MMC student, Hodgson shares two pieces of advice that have helped him quickly grow his career. The first? Network. “Say yes to as many opportunities as you can manage but don’t bite off more than you can chew,” he says. “Internships, volunteering, getting involved around school - you will meet someone somewhere that can help you grow.”

Second, “Always be accountable. If someone can give you a task and is assured that it will get done in a timely manner, new and exciting opportunities will continue to come at you!”
