Remembering Professor Joseph P. Clancy

Dr. Clancy was a professor and esteemed faculty member of the Marymount Manhattan College community for many years.

The Emeritus Professor of English and Literature and Theatre Arts passed away on Monday, February 27, 2017 in Glasgow, Scotland.

Dr. Clancy was the first chair of the English department and was a faculty member for forty years. An esteemed and prolific translator and author, Dr. Clancy’s translations of Welsh poetry and literature earned him numerous awards and honors, including an honorary Litt.D from the University of Wales. His work in translation made Welsh poetry and drama accessible to the English reader. A special edition of one his volumes was published with original artwork of another Marymount Manhattan legend, the late Sr. Judith Savard, RSHM.

Clancy was married to Gertrude with whom he raised 8 children. Gertrude came to Marymount Manhattan as a returning student and graduated in 1988.  In 1990 when the Clancy’s retired, they moved to Aberystwyth, Wales.

He is survived by his 8 children, 14 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren. Our hearts and condolences go out to his family in the U.K. and his friends across the globe. Thank you, Dr. Clancy, for all that you’ve contributed to and given us over your lifetime. Rest In Peace.
