The Art Major at Marymount Manhattan College receives something unique: professional artistic training combined with a solid grounding in the Liberal Arts. The Art Major combines both theory and practice in a comprehensive and integrated way. The study of studio art, photography, graphic design and art history provide students with a thorough foundation in the visual arts, creating art on one hand and studying the history of visual culture on the other.

Marymount Manhattan College offers a BA in Studio Art and a BA in Art History. The Art Department offers students a program designed to accommodate the artist, the designer and the historian. Within this flexible program students have the option to concentrate in studio art, photography, graphic design or art history. In addition Art Majors may choose from a number of minors, including Arts Management, Art History, Studio Art, Graphic Design and Photography.

Within the art program are opportunities for independent studies, apprenticeships, internships, access to artists' studios, lectures, forums and many other unique experiences found only in New York City -- at the Center of Excellence. In addition, all of MMC's Art programs provide competency for graduate studies as well as an introduction to the world of gallery and museum work.

The Studio Art Concentration
Art Majors in the Studio Art concentration begin their studies with a basic foundation in drawing, painting and design. They continue with art history courses, figure drawing and studio electives where they may select from offerings in photography, ceramics, printmaking, digital imaging, mixed media, watercolor and advanced drawing and painting. The capstone Senior Art Seminar with a presentation, personal portfolio or art exhibit concludes their 39 credit requirement. Studio majors are encouraged to develop a personal vision, broadened and informed by an interdisciplinary approach to the liberal arts.

The Graphic Design Concentration
The Graphic Design concentration provides students with the foundation principals and the technological software skills necessary for further study or professional entry in the print and web design fields. The courses in the minor address foundation design, digital page design, digital photo manipulation (imaging), digital illustration and multi-media. On completion of the program the student will graduate with a professional portfolio.

The Art History Concentration
By studying art in museums and galleries, in conjunction with research projects, students working toward a BA in Art History receive a thorough foundation in the survey of art, as well as Renaissance, Baroque, Modern and Contemporary Art. Four more electives are from both Western and non-Western traditions. Three studio courses help combine the theory with the practice of art. Click here for the Art History Student Handbook.

Photography Concentration
Students pursuing a concentration in Photography are provided a strong foundation in the construction of visual images through a course of study in craft, theory and vision. Foundation courses in the 42-credit concentration are offered at MMC and upper division courses are offered through our partner institution, The International Center of Photography. Located in midtown Manhattan, ICP, features a world-class museum, houses state of the art darkroom and digital facilities, and manages the largest collection of photographic books in their reference library. Students may select courses to strengthen skills in lighting, portraiture, landscape, photojournalism, medium and large format photography and advanced darkroom and digital techniques.
